Weekend Tour Plan
By Priya Ganapathy
Coorg or Kodagu is a region where one can spend days, months or years and still never tire of its startling beauty. I tend to be partial, because my roots lie here. Though a week or fortnight would be the ideal holiday duration to unravel Coorg’s mysteries at a comfortable pace, city-dwellers and office-goers opt for Coorg as a weekend getaway. Personally, I would push for an extended weekend. While my personal favourite spots tend to involve remote corners in four-wheel drive terrains, the weekend traveler can capture a taste of Coorg’s magic in a few easily accessible must-dos.

TREK TO TADIYANDAMOL, COORG’S TALLEST PEAK
It was still dark when I woke up and I tip-toed about the house so as not to wake up the rest of my family. After a hurried breakfast of oats and some bananas, I went through my trek checklist and gathered up my equipment and left a note saying where I was going and what time I would be back in case I was out of phone coverage for the rest of the day.
MANDALPATTI IN COORG: AMAZING SUNSET, TREKKING, ADVENTURE & MORE
The word Coorg or Kodagu conjures up images of green hills, beautiful people and the famous “pandi curry”. For me it brings back a flood of memories – comfort of home, the pampering, endless rains and the hills that were explored during the long summer holidays.
TREKKING: THE CALL OF MALETHIRKE BELLS IN COORG
There are many trekking trails in Coorg. Among them one of the most scenic trails is to the Malethirke temple located at Karada-Palangala village, 15 km from Virajpet, bordering the states of Kerala and Karnataka.
Clothing
The Kodava man’s attire is a kupya (long black or white wrap-around tunic) secured with a red gold-embroidered silk chele (sash), into the front of which is tucked a peeche kathi (dagger sheathed in an ornate scabbard of silver and gold, ivory and wood). A white mande thuni (turban) or a red chouka (checkered scarf) is tied around the head.
The Coorg style of draping a sari involves tucking the pleats at the back of the waist, instead of the front. The end of the sari is brought below the left shoulder, and secured over the right shoulder in a firm knot called ‘molakattu’.
